CANASTA TURNS TEN: NEXT SATURDAY, 6/2 @ SCHUBAS!
Once upon a Belle & Sebastian Tribute show on June 3rd, 2002, a group of precocious indie-poppers took the stage at the legendary Schubas for their very first performance. Little did they know that over the next decade, they’d go on to live out one rock n' roll fantasy after another… recording and selling out three releases, getting remixed by their peers, landing their music on the radio and in TV ads, garnering all sorts of terrific press, raising money for countless excellent causes, playing scores of live shows throughout the U.S. and Mongolia (?), headlining their favorite venues, sharing stages with their musical heroes and our now Commander-in-Chief, and singlehandedly re-popularizing the 1950’s card game of the same name (not really)… That band was, of course, none other than yours truly, Canasta.

On Saturday, June 2nd, we will be celebrating our tenth anniversary! It’s a proud and joyous occasion and we couldn’t be more thrilled to be playing where it all started… Schubas! The show will feature the band in its current lineup, but we’ll also be joined by some of our finest ex-bandmates (a.k.a. “The Ghosts of Canasta Past.”), plus the Canasty Horns to boot! In the name of nostalgia, we may even bust out a B&S cover or two. Opening the show will be Chicagoans Wooden Rings, a band whose name we expect you’ll soon be hearing often and one celebrating the release of their self-titled debut! Led by Ramah Jihan, “this ambitious ensemble, composed of nylon string guitar, clarinet, cello, xylophone, electric bass, and harmonized tenor vocals, approaches the genre of acoustic chamber pop with a magazine of broken-hearted love songs.”

So there you have it. The 18+ gig begins at 9pm and Canasta will hit the stage at 10. Tickets are just $12 and available HERE. This will indeed be a once-in-a-lifetime show and we can’t wait to see you all there! But don’t take our word for it; check out the nice things folks have been saying in The Onion A.V. Club, ChicagoVerseUniteD, The Deli, Mapanare, Windy City Rock and Loud Loop Press. To get you in the mood, here is the phenomenal screenprinted poster by Phineas X. Jones (of which we’ll have exactly twelve to sell at the show)…
