CANASTA - Covers + Radio Shows + New Press + Mondays @ Schubas in April

(sent on 2006-03-27)

Hey everyone,

Well, it's almost April, and you know what that means. The baseball season begins, taxes are due, and Canasta is playing Schubas every single Monday as part of the club's Practice Space residency! If you haven't been there, Schubas is very cozy, the sound is great, and as of a couple months ago, they've banned smoking in the back music room (you can still smoke in the front bar). So it's a pretty ideal place to see live music. And throughout the month, we'll be joined by some of Chicago's best live acts, including The Aluminum Group, Velvetron, Eric Ziegenhagen, and Cameron McGill -- as well as touring bands Kelly Stoltz, Page France, Hopewell, and Moonlight Towers.

We've also got some exciting plans for the residency -- besides just rocking you every week. On the first Monday in April (the 3rd), we'll be debuting two brand-new songs, both of which are downright awesome. And then during the next two weeks, we'll be playing the winners of our Choose a Cover contest: overwhelming favorite "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" (by Tears for Fears) and "The Only Living Boy in New York" (by Simon and Garfunkel). You can expect one of the songs on the 10th and the other on the 17th. And by the way, thanks to everyone for voting -- we recorded nearly a hundred votes!

If four nights of Canasta isn't enough for you, we'll also be appearing live on WLUW 88.7 FM on Friday, April 7, at 5 PM, as part of the station's "Full-On Friday" show. WLUW is one of the best radio stations in Chicago, independent or not, and they're sponsoring the Practice Space shows, so be sure to tune in as you're driving home from work!

And lastly, a couple more reviews of We Were Set Up have shown up. The Illinois Entertainer calls Canasta &ldwuo;one of Chicago's most promising and hardest working bands” and praises the “more mature and exciting arrangements” of our full-length debut. And The Daily Herald review is glowing as well. Describing us as “a sextet that finely lines its songs with a multitude of instruments and obscures traditional pop structures to create miniature blockbusters built for the head and heart,” Mark Guarino goes on to write: “Canasta is not designed for comparisons, as these songs take big drives into the territories of soul, twee pop, rock and country without fully becoming any of them. What makes their music so compelling is the opulence of their group dynamic. On this debut, the songs become the band, not the other way around.”

Can't wait to see you in April!
