CANASTA - EVERY MON. in APRIL @ SCHUBAS! + VOTE on COVERS + NEW SONGS!

(sent on 2006-03-10)

Hey everyone,

Hope you're enjoying the lovely spring weather. We've got some exciting news from Camp Canasta. Schubas, one of our favorite clubs in Chicago, has offered us their prestigious Practice Space residency for the month of April. That means we'll be playing there every single Monday night next month! It's certainly an honor: Practice Space alums include the M's, the Changes, Kelly Hogan, Jason Molina, and Bobby Conn.

Anyway, we're hoping you're as delirious about this as we are, especially when we tell you the lineups we've assembled for each show. On April 3, we're sandwiched between ultra-melodic Sub Pop artist Kelly Stoltz and buzz band Page France. Then, for the rest of the month, we're headlining each show and the cover's just $6. On the 10th, we'll be joined by orchestral rockers Hopewell (ex-Mercury Rev, produced by Dave Fridmann) and the always charming Eric Ziegenhagen (with band). The 17th will feature the luxuriant post-rock of Velvetron and appealing singer-songwriter Cameron McGill. And finally, on the 24th, you'll be treated to the first local performance in over a year from literate lounge-pop act the Aluminum Group as well as Austin power-pop sensations Moonlight Towers. Whew!

We're also taking this opportunity to debut a pair of new songs, our first since We Were Set Up was released. Come to the April 3 show to hear the fruits of our recent labors. But we've also decided that it would be fun to do a couple new cover songs during the following weeks of the residency. But since we're notorious for arguing about this sort of thing, we are putting the selection process in YOUR HANDS. So take a look at these eleven candidates, and then reply to this e-mail with your favorite two (2) songs. (Or visit our website, if you lose this e-mail.) The two songs with the most votes will summarily be subjected to the Canasta treatment! Voting ends next Wednesday, March 15, at 5 PM.

  • Bachelorette - Björk
  • Digital Love - Daft Punk
  • Dreams - Fleetwood Mac
  • Everybody Wants To Rule The World - Tears for Fears
  • Everything Hits At Once - Spoon
  • Killer Queen - Queen
  • Like I Love You - Justin Timberlake
  • Never Tear Us Apart - INXS
  • The Only Living Boy in New York - Simon & Garfunkel
  • This Kiss - Faith Hill
  • West End Girls - Pet Shop Boys

We've got a couple more Practice Space surprises in store for you, too, but we are going to play our cards close to our chest for now. But we're really looking forward to seeing a good number of you at each of these shows, especially since it's such a big deal for us right now.

Finally, we have two out-of-town shows coming up as well. Next Saturday, March 18, we'll be at the Onopa Brewery in Milwaukee, and then Thursday, April 13, will find us at The House Cafe in DeKalb. More details can be found below…

Looking forward to seeing all of you soon!
